Thanking him for his role in expediting the return of his son,2 who was suffering from the effects of African Coast Fever, and making arrangements for his return upon his recovery.
- 1. Sir Sidney Colpoys Dacres (1805-84; Dictionary of National Biography), Vice-Admiral 1865; had fought in the Crimean War; Commander-in-chief in the Channel 1863; KCB 1865; joined Admiralty same year; first Sea Lord 1868-72.
- 2. Sydney Smith Haldimand Dickens (1847-72), CD’s seventh child, who was a midshipman; he was promoted to Sub-Lieutenant on 30 Aug 1867. He died at sea on 24 April 1872.
